“Nothing more fearful than an idle dream has terrified God’s Son, and made him think that he has lost his innocence, denied his Father, and made war upon himself. So fearful is the dream, so seeming real, he could not waken to reali- ty without the sweat of terror and a scream of mortal fear, unless a gentler dream preceded his awaking, and allowed his calmer mind to welcome, not to fear, the Voice That calls with love to waken him; a gentler dream, in which his suffering was healed and where his brother was his friend.”
“This fearful world is no more than “an idle dream.” Yet we cling to it, because we believe that to leave it, we “must first go through a greater terror still,’—a deeper dream in which we come face to face with our angry Father and the rotting corpse of our own soul. This, we think, is the nightmarish reality that awaits us on the other side of our dream, yet this, too, is just another mirage. To coax us out of our dream, the Holy Spirit must again assume His role as translator. This time He must translate the waking state into a “happy dream,” a reflection of wakefulness that we, on this level, can understand and find attractive (it is thus a happy state of mind, not a pleasurable state of external affairs). Like a cool oasis, this happy dream beckons us out of the ego’s barren desert. It allows us to make a gentle transition out of our nightmare and ultimately into a state that is beyond our current comprehension.”
